Spring Break in Lao

G'day!

My forboding of the next days' strenuousness proved correct. After just 6 hours of busdrive from Luang Prabang, I woke up to find myself in the heart of the US and A at Spring Break: Bars broadcasting the TV-series "Friends" in endless loops, food stands selling Hot Dogs and "Winner's Schnitzel", and drunk Americans trying to knock over a poor guy's Tuk Tuk.
I won't tell you which side I took, but let me tell you that the dark force is strong, my young apprentice... ;)

I will put a cloak of silence over the next days'events. If you know German you may be able to get some dirty details and pictures (literally) out of Stevies blog-entry.

But don't judge too quickly! After one month of traveling through south-east Asia (not only on the paved track, so to say), it was somehow refreshing to experience this distant(un-)culture of the American enclave Vang Vieng, right in the middle of nowhere.

I have to stress the point that what made us stay longer than planned was not the bucket bar(!) or the excellent milk shakes, it was the spectacular mountainous surrounding of Vang Vieng pervaded by huge caves, the idyllic Nam Song river crawling through the city and the lovely guesthouse we stayed at (My Lyn). It was actually some of the most impressive daytrips we've had so far, which helped me get over the last nites hangover ;)

Always stay on the paths, they said.

Never leave marked tracks, they wrote.

Maybe we were leaning out of the window a bit, in a region where every morning you could hear mines being safely detonated in the distance.
