East Coast

Honestly, the East Coast of the South Island of New Zealand isn´t what I would call a touristic hotspot. If a city like Oamaru has to advertise itself with its historic (20th century) buildings and its beautiful parks (rosebushes, so what?), time has usually come to roll up the windows and gain some kilometers.
But we were still a bit groggy from our previous days´ hike and didn´t really object to some light sightseeing.

Oamaru is all Irish - so a Whiskey Brewery is obligatory

On the road again, Ireland turned into U.S.A again.

Pit stops at nice beaches

Only one place on this section of the East Coast has the potential of drawing tourists like moths to the flame: the mysterious Moeraki boulders, gigantic perfectly round rocks that just can be found on this particular beach around Moeraki. They are believed to be shaped by the force of glaciers which kept them rolling along while they were advancing. (At least that´s what a British smartass at the beach told us ;)

Glaciers or tourists, what kept the stones rolling?

Like dumplings in the pan

Dispersed between the boulders, a multitude of different shells
