Tongariro Crossing

Speaking of Sam and Frodo, it must have been clear which part I was playing our last hikes, always yearning a suckling-pig and a huge mug of bear after the first few meters of difference in altitude. But on Mount Doom, like in the movie, the roles were changing. While Frodo was generally being whiny about the heat, the steep climb and the mosquitoes, Sam gathered all his willpower and managed the slope without too much of exertion, leaving some power to race down the bouldery slope in record time. That was the best 10 minutes I had on our whole trip so far!

But it wasn't all about the adventure. The inhospitable, sulfur-laden landscape that could have been the film set for any Sci-Fi-Movie on Mars, was awe-inspiring. Never have I imagined how diversified nature without animals or plants (apart from the occasional bug or scrub) could be.

Towards the end the surroundings are not that "scenic" anymore (DOC speak) and the 8-hour hike (including Mt. Doom) gets a bit tiring, but nevertheless the Tongariro Crossing is definitely one of the real Great Walks of New Zealand and IMHO far more recommendable than the overpriced Miford Track.

Still a long way to go

Exhausted but happy we drove back to Lake Taupo to wash ourselves and the dishes, before we started the treasure hunt kindly set up for us by Ulli, Tessi, Lisa and Nanni. The magic potion and the cookies were definitely the thing at that moment!
Again, a big THANKS to you guys!!! Was a really funny and tricky riddle.
